Cleft Lip and Palate

Indications

Cleft Lip and Palate issues are discovered at birth

Surgery

Repair requires removal of excess skin through a lower abdominal wall incision, possible liposuction to selected areas, and tightening of rectus muscles. Time 2-4 hrs.

Location

Hospital, general anesthesia, 1-2 day hospital stay.

Trade Offs

Moderate surgical discomfort, bruising, swelling, numbness of the abdominal wall skin, and a permanent lower abdominal and periumbilical scar is expected.

Risks

Although uncommon, infection, bleeding, delayed healing, skin loss, poor scarring, phlebitis and blood clots are complications that can prolong recovery or necessitate a return to surgery.

Recovery

Our patients wear a supporting garment or girdle for 3-4 weeks to encourage good wound healing and minimize complications. Patients return to work and light physical activity at 2- 4 weeks and a normal exercise routine at 6 weeks. Most patients are tired for 3- 4 weeks after surgery. Scar maturation occurs in 18-24 months.
