INDICATIONS FOR BREAST REDUCTION
Breasts enlarge as a result of genetics, pregnancy, or weight gain. The presence of disproportionately large breasts is associated with neck, back and shoulder pain, postural discomfort, shoulder grooves, difficulty exercising, and rashes under the breast.
BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
The operation reduces the size of the breast by removal of breast tissue, and skin. Time 2-3 hrs.
LOCATION
Surgery is performed at Ellis Hospital conveniently located near Albany in the Capital District, NY, general anesthesia, overnight stay if desired.
TRADE OFFS OF BREAST REDUCTION
There is mild surgical discomfort, bruising, swelling, and nipple sensitivity for about 2-3 weeks after surgery. The alterations in nipple sensitivity may occasionally last longer. Permanent scars are present but vary according to the technique used for surgery. Most of the techniques we utilize allow for preservation of nipple sensation and breast- feeding.
RISKS OF BREAST REDUCTION
Although uncommon, complications can occur and include bleeding, infection, delayed healing with skin or nipple loss, asymmetry, widened and prominent scars and the occasional need for additional surgery.
RECOVERY FROM BREAST REDUCTION
Our patients wear a supporting bra for 3-4 weeks to encourage good wound healing and minimize complications. Most patients return to work 1-3 weeks following surgery depending on their occupation, light physical activity at 2- 4 weeks and their normal exercise routine at 6 weeks. Scar maturation occurs in 18-24 months.
