A patient recently asked if Silicone Breast Augments are permanent or do they need to be replaced from time to time.

According to recent American Society of Plastic Surgery statistics (ASPS), breast augmentation continues to be the top cosmetic surgical procedure and has been since 2006. Approximately, 85% of women choose silicone implants. In general, silicone implants can be expected to last at least 10 years or longer provided that there has been no major chest wall/breast trauma. Breast implants do not have a specific “expiration date” on shelf-life and modern silicone implants can last 10-20 years. However, it is important to stress that implants are not lifetime devices and will eventually have to be replaced or removed, especially if rupture is confirmed clinically or by MRI evaluation.
